ForeFlight 4.4 and Documents Lands in App Store!

ForeFlight Mobile 4.4 has landed in App Store. The theme for this release?

Documents, Documents, Documents!

Our goals when we set out to add Documents support to ForeFlight Mobile included integrating a rich reference library with everything from chart legends to complete regional A/FD documents; simplifying the steps required to find and load important aviation documents into the app; providing a robust document viewer that allows pilots to quickly switch between Documents and other ForeFlight functions without changing apps; providing many ways to import documents into ForeFlight Mobile; and simplifying document management and distribution for both small and large flight departments.

Basically, we want to make sure you have everything you need when you fly with the iPad: reference materials, aircraft manuals, regulatory documents, and all the flying handbooks you can tolerate.  We designed Documents to take advantage of the large iPad screen, and it currently requires the iPad version of ForeFlight Mobile.

Other ForeFlight Enhancements

Before jumping into the details of the new documents system, there are a number of other enhancements and changes we’d like to point out:

  • Tapping on map markers on iPad reveals more information about the airport, reducing the need to toggle between the map and the airports page in order to access frequency, FBO, weather, and terminal procedure information.
  • Larger popovers for PIREPs so that long PIREP text is not clipped.
  • Improved “disambiguation” for route strings. In the event that multiple things are named “TED”, ForeFlight Mobile will ask you which you meant.
  • In order to make room for Documents on the iPad, we moved Downloads to the ‘More’ view.  You’ll still see a red number when it is time to download new updates – just in a new place.

Documents Tab: Introduction

The first time you launch ForeFlight Mobile 4.4 on the iPad, you will see a new Documents tab. Tapping that, you may notice that the Documents view looks strikingly similar to the Plates organizer. We wanted the experience of managing and organizing your aviation documents to be instantly familiar, and modeling the Documents system after our Plates binder achieves this. Add documents to the default binder, organize documents in an arrangement that meets your needs, add documents to binders created for a particular tail number, and organize documents around your flight training objectives.

Adding Documents from a Catalog

The Catalog view lets you add documents to your binder from the FAA, NAV CANADA, or ForeFlight catalogs.  Handbooks, chart legends, terminal procedure references … all included, all free to existing ForeFlight customers.  You can also download the latest version of our user manual – the Pilot’s Guide for ForeFlight Mobile.

Importing Your Own Documents

You can import PDF, JPG, TIF, PNG, and GIF files into your document binders.  There are two methods of importing documents:

  • Importing from Mail, Safari, and other apps
When viewing a document inside apps like Safari, Mail, or Dropbox, tap Open In… from the list of commands, and then tap ForeFlight.  This will launch ForeFlight Mobile, add the document to the end of your current binder, and open the document for viewing.
  • Importing from iTunes
Connect your iPad to your desktop, launch iTunes, and use iTunes’ to drag and drop documents into ForeFlight
ForeFlight Mobile’s integrated Documents viewer supports PDF, TIFF, PNG, JPG, and GIF file formats. That means you could add, for example, a POH as a PDF as well as a scanned (TIFF) checklist you might have hanging around.

Always Up To Date, Integrated with Downloads

The new Documents system is integrated tightly into ForeFlight’s robust download management system. Document currency is tracked just like aviation databases, instrument procedures, and charts, so ForeFlight will ensure you always have the latest version of any document we make available via the Catalogs.

If a new version of a documents comes available – for example, the 2013 AIM – ForeFlight Mobile will display a numbered badge on the application icon, the More tab, and on the Downloads view. The next time you set time aside to update your databases, ForeFlight will deliver the newest editions of the documents.

ForeFlight Document Catalogs

The new Documents system instantly adds value to your current ForeFlight subscription by including catalogs with a rich selection of ForeFlight curated documents to select from. Purchasing these documents separately, you would quickly spend more than the cost of a ForeFlight Mobile subscription.

Three catalogs are included by default: an FAA catalog, a ForeFlight catalog, and a NAV CANADA catalog. Here’s a sampling of the documents included:

  • A Pilot’s Guide to ForeFlight Mobile
  • ForeFlight Mobile Legends (a reference to radar and map symbology)
  • The FAA’s Digital Terminal Procedures supplements
  • FAA green-book Airport/Facility Directory supplementals
  • FAA Class B enhancement graphics
  • Aeronautical Chart User’s Guide
  • Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM)
  • Airplane Flying Handbook
  • Aviation Instructor’s Handbook
  • The FAA’s “Aviation Weather” Handbook
  • The FAA/NOAA Guide to Aviation Weather Services
  • Instrument Flying Handbook
  • Instrument Procedures Handbook
  • Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge
  • The Pilot/Controller Glossary
  • Legends! IFR, VFR, and TAC Chart Legends!
  • NAV CANADA’s CAP GEN

ForeFlight Accepted into GAMA

We are pleased to announce that ForeFlight received word today that its application for membership into the General Aviation Manufacturer’s Association (GAMA) was accepted. GAMA is a highly respected industry association devoted to fostering and advancing the general welfare, safety, interests, and activities of general aviation. Membership in GAMA is available to companies that meet certain criteria and requires approval by the GAMA board of directors.

As ForeFlight has grown over the past four years, we have come to appreciate that advocacy is an extremely important part of ensuring that the freedoms and access to aviation infrastructure we have as pilots are preserved. The news of late is replete with stories about government actions that could alter this, make flying more expensive, and affect the safety of flight.

The freedom to fly is special and magical. We look forward to helping shape the future direction of general aviation through ForeFlight’s participation in GAMA.

Additional information regarding GAMA is available on the web at gama.aero.

ForeFlight Launches ForeFlight Manage™

We are excited to announce the official launch of ForeFlight Manage™, an online portal for individual and business aviation customers that provides access to account information and ForeFlight Mobile subscription, pilot, and device management tools.

ForeFlight Mobile customers can access ForeFlight Manage™ online today at http://www.foreflight.com/manage.

The growth of our individual and corporate customer base has provided us a number of opportunities to observe large iPad deployments, which means we have learned much about the tools required to successfully manage devices when flight departments or business aviation customer deploying tens or even hundreds of iPads. In addition to supporting many individual pilots, ForeFlight also supports many Fortune 500 corporate flight departments, fractional operators, charter operators, and government customers ranging from the FAA to the FBI. ForeFlight Manage™ delivers a set of management tools and an online platform both individual and business aviation customers can use to simplify ForeFlight account and deployment management.

From within ForeFlight Manage™, customers can review past purchases and invoices, one-click upgrade to add account features, add and remove pilots, and manage iOS devices. ForeFlight Manage™ eliminates software license key management, allowing customer deployment managers and pilots to access ForeFlight services using a shared or individual account email address and password.

ForeFlight Manage™ uses an email invitation workflow to provision new pilots, simplifying the process with which new pilots are granted access to ForeFlight Mobile. Pilots are added or removed from ForeFlight Manage™ by flight department managers at any time. Flight department managers can view iOS devices in use, remotely deactivate subscriptions on devices that no longer need access, and easily upgrade subscription services.

The adoption of iPads in flight operations requires tools that make daily flight department operations more efficient, and ForeFlight Manage™ – along with a long list of planned future capabilities – is designed to meet operational efficiency needs. If your flight operation is interested in learning about what the future holds, contact us at team@foreflight.com.
