HOUSTON, TX | July 10, 2018: ForeFlight, creator of the widely used ForeFlight Mobile Integrated Flight App, today announced the availability of Sentry™, a next-generation portable ADS-B In receiver. In addition to essential FIS-B weather, flight information, traffic, and backup attitude, Sentry adds a Carbon Monoxide monitor and alarm, a 12-hour battery, and a high-capacity data card for Weather Replay™ and storage. Sentry is packaged in the smallest form factor yet for a device this capable.

Retailing at $499 USD, Sentry is the most affordable full-featured off-the-shelf portable ADS-B In solution available on the market.

“Sentry™ is a compact, powerful, next-generation portable ADS-B receiver made possible by new technology and engineering ingenuity. Purpose-built ADS-B integrated circuits, for example, have made it possible to shrink the size, reduce power consumption, extend the battery life, add new capabilities, and lower the cost. We’ve streamlined and compressed the communications between ForeFlight Mobile and Sentry™, which results in the more efficient use of Sentry’s™ processors and extended battery life,” said Tyson Weihs, ForeFlight co-founder and CEO. “We want every ForeFlight pilot flying with the benefits ADS-B has to offer. With Sentry™, ForeFlight pilots have a powerful suite of capabilities available at a compelling price that will improve situational awareness and safety in the cockpit.”

ForeFlight and Palo Alto-based uAvionix teamed up to design and manufacture Sentry.

“With Sentry™, uAvionix and ForeFlight have created the most advanced portable flight safety device on the market, enabling in-flight traffic and weather, synthetic vision, and toxic CO detection all for the equivalent cost to a couple of hours of flight time,” says uAvionix CEO Paul Beard, “We continue to be proud partners with ForeFlight on such an important advancement in the next generation of ADS-B In portables.”

A first for portable ADS-B receivers, Sentry provides a cockpit carbon monoxide sensor and alerting system. When CO concentration reaches a hazardous level, Sentry emits a loud, distinctive alarm. In addition, within the ForeFlight app an audio alert can be heard through compatible headsets, and an alert message is displayed on the screen. The middle LED indicator on Sentry also provides a visual indication of the CO level.
Sentry supports the full range of FIS-B weather and data, including animated regional and CONUS NEXRAD, METARs, TAFs, AIR/SIGMETs, PIREPs, winds and temps aloft, TFRs, NOTAMs, and SUA information. Sentry can also receive air-to-air traffic information from ADS-B Out equipped aircraft and re-broadcast traffic information (ADS-R and TIS-B) from FAA ground towers. As they become available, Sentry will also support the new FIS-B weather products to include icing, turbulence, cloud tops, lightning, G-AIRMETs, and CWAs in a future ForeFlight Mobile release.
Sentry has onboard memory to support Weather Replay™ which provides automatic storage of up to 30-minutes of FIS-B data. Sleep the iPad and then receive a burst of updates when the iPad wakes. If there is more than one iPad connected, each iPad will be synced to have the same data replayed. ForeFlight will also animate ADS-B radar, looping up to 30-minutes of radar while in flight.

Sentry has a compact form factor at 57mm x 83mm x 36mm (2.2in x 3.3in x 1.4in) and weighs in at 119 grams (0.26 lbs). The dual ADS-B antennas are optimized for 978 MHz and 1090 MHz frequencies and are integrated into the device. The traffic awareness capability functions worldwide.

Sentry is easy to setup and use – there’s no hardware to assemble, no software to download. Simply position the sturdy RAM® mount on any window surface and snap Sentry into place. Sentry’s internal Lithium-ion battery offers over 12-hours of continuous use so you can fly all day without recharging.

Customers can connect their iPad or iPhone directly to Sentry’s integrated Wi-Fi network and receive inflight subscription-free ADS-B weather and traffic information, GPS data, backup attitude, and pressure altitude displayed in the ForeFlight Mobile app.

ForeFlight Customers Invited to Participate in MITRE Mobile Clearance Delivery Testing at KHEF

Would you like your expected IFR clearance in writing before talking to ATC? If the answer is yes (and you file IFR flight plans using ForeFlight out of Manassas Regional Airport), then you can help The MITRE Corporation test new clearance delivery tech.

MITRE is researching how mobile devices can be used to deliver IFR clearances at airports that are not equipped with Pre-Departure Clearance/Data Comm Clearance (PDC/DCL). Currently, pilots receive IFR clearances through telephone or radio calls to a Flight Service Station or an air traffic control facility serving the area. These methods can be time-consuming and subject to interpretation errors.

ForeFlight is helping MITRE facilitate the delivery of a text-based IFR clearance so in the future, audio-based communication will be significantly reduced. We believe this could improve flight plan accuracy, reduce both pilot and controller workload, and reduce delays at non-towered airports.

KHEF is the initial location selected to test the concept with general aviation pilots. Participation is voluntary and available to pilots who routinely file IFR flight plans departing KHEF through ForeFlight. ForeFlight will contact eligible participants via email.

The test at KHEF will commence on or about May 15, 2018 and end no later than July 29, 2018. Feedback received from this test will be used by researchers to determine any adjustments necessary to move on to subsequent phases of the test.

What to Expect During the Test Process

Participating pilots will compare the text-based clearance received via email from ForeFlight to the audio clearance received from ATC.

After filing your flight plan with ForeFlight, you may receive expected clearance information via email 30-minutes prior to departure. You will then contact ATC to pick up your clearance like normal. After the flight, you will provide feedback through the MITRE website about whether the emailed clearance information matched your actual clearance provided by ATC.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of this experiment?

This experiment will investigate the methods and benefits of implementing a low-cost capability that allows a pilot to retrieve their expected IFR clearance using a mobile device.

Will this test change how I obtain my IFR clearance?

NO, you are still required to contact KHEF Clearance Delivery and obtain your clearance. Unless asked by ATC, please do not mention to ATC that you are participating in this test. The test is intended to be transparent to ATC.

Is the email I receive from ForeFlight a clearance?

NO, the information in the email does NOT constitute a clearance.

How do I participate in this test?

If you are a ForeFlight subscriber and operate out of KHEF, you will receive an invitation from ForeFlight to participate. You must agree to the terms of participation and opt-in for the test. You can opt-out at any time.

What is my role as a pilot participating in this test?

When you file an IFR flight plan departing KHEF, you will receive an email from ForeFlight with expected clearance information. Follow the feedback link in the email and tell us how the email data compared to the clearance you received verbally from ATC.

How widespread is this test and how long will it last?

Initial field test activities are only being conducted at KHEF. This test will begin on or around May 15, 2018 and end by July 29, 2018.

Will I receive an email from ForeFlight for every IFR flight?

Not necessarily. Certain circumstances may prevent the email from being generated. This test will not be sending Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) information. The email will not include a transponder code. The test is only in effect when Manassas Tower is open.

For questions or general comments, contact the MITRE team at MobileCD@mitre.org.

ForeFlight’s powerful, state-of-the-art map engine gives the app its signature speed and fluidity when panning and zooming. The global basemap and data-driven Aeronautical Map layer feature Jeppesen’s high-quality terrain, obstacle, and NavData®.

In addition, Jeppesen’s Europe VFR data is integrated into the Aeronautical Map, giving VFR pilots all of the information they need to fly, including VFR waypoints, arrival and departure procedures, circuits, holds, no overfly areas, nature reserves, and more.

For IFR flyers, optional Jeppesen chart coverages are available today and include departure, arrival, and geo-referenced terminal procedures, airport charts, data-driven enroute charts, and Jeppesen Airway Manual supplements.

Smart, Interactive Route Planning

ForeFlight makes preflight planning fast and easy. Customers can plan a route in minutes using ForeFlight’s interactive Map or the form-based Flights view. The Graphical Route Advisor feature produces EUROCONTROL validated routes within a matter of seconds and presents the options for comparison on a visual preview map.

For customers on the top-tier Performance Plus plan, ForeFlight also provides a Recommended Route option that produces the best route based on wind, temperature, and the specific aircraft performance profile.

In addition, planning for and navigating through the complex airspace in Europe is easier with ForeFlight’s new Airspace in Profile and Automatic Airspace Highlight capabilities.

In the app’s Profile View, a vertical cross-section of the planned route is depicted with airspaces, terrain, and obstacles. The view is interactive so tapping on an element in the Profile simultaneously highlights the location of that element on the map below. Inflight, Profile View depicts the aircraft’s current altitude in relation to airspace, terrain, and obstacles along the flight track.

The Automatic Airspace Highlight feature considers the flight’s climb, cruise, and descent trajectory to highlight airspace near the aircraft or along the route of flight. All other airspace dims to reduce airspace clutter on the map. This feature works in both preflight planning mode and in flight.

Integrated Flight Plan Filing for ICAO IFR, VFR, YFR & ZFR

Customers can file flight plans directly from the mobile app or on the web. ForeFlight’s global, redundant AFTN connection provides fast, direct, and unlimited access to filing flight plans with EUROCONTROL with no additional cost or account configuration required. Routes from the Graphical Route Advisor can be filtered based on IFR, VFR, YFR, or ZFR flight rules making it easier to find the correct route and to select it for filing.

Stunning Weather Visualization

The planned route line can be viewed in relation to a full range of interactive aviation weather layers, including animated radar, global satellite and winds aloft, color-coded METARs and TAFs, graphical AIR/SIGMETs, global icing and turbulence, surface pressure isobars, and more. A separate Imagery view neatly organizes static weather forecast imagery by region.

ForeFlight in the Air

Once in the cockpit, the Maps tab transitions from comprehensive preflight planning tool to dynamic inflight navigation support. For the ultimate situational awareness, the innovative Charts on Maps feature overlays approach plates and airport diagrams onto the moving map, along with aircraft position, weather, and hazards in one integrated view.

ForeFlight’s advanced, global hazard awareness technology helps pilots plan and fly with more confidence in all conditions and terrain. The top-down-view Hazard Advisor map layer, the side Profile View, and 3D Synthetic Vision depict a clear picture of terrain and obstacle hazards anywhere in the world. When paired with a compatible AHRS source, Synthetic Vision provides a backup attitude display.

In addition to AHRS, ForeFlight’s Connect platform enables portable and installed avionics to connect with ForeFlight Mobile and deliver capabilities like two-way flight plan transfer, and the display of ADS-B traffic and GPS data. Learn more about ForeFlight Connect at foreflight.com/connect.

Hurricane Harvey Update from ForeFlight

Over the weekend, Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coast. In a 24-hour period, an estimated 419,000,000,000 gallons (yes, billions) of rainfall in just Houston – and more than 9 trillion gallons in Southeast Texas over the weekend – created the worst flooding the region has ever experienced. Some areas are experiencing an “800-year flood event”.

As of this writing the rain continues to fall and flood waters in many areas are still rising as bayous and rivers overflow their banks at record levels. It was frightening to ride out and it is gut wrenching to now see the images of fellow Texans in distress.

The Houston-based ForeFlight team is fortunate: everyone has checked in as being safe and no significant injury or flood damage to our homes has been reported. Many in the Houston area have fared far worse, and our thoughts are with them.

Emergency management resources are overwhelmed and have been asking anyone with equipment  to come forward and help rescue operations. Texans are responding in force, deploying boats and other assets to assist. In last night’s press conference, the United States Coast Guard reported they have more than 20 helicopters deployed in conjunction with Customs & Border Protection and Texas Department of Public Safety, as well as three flood response teams that arrived from Paducah, KY and Memphis, TN. In addition, the good samaritans of the “Cajun Navy” activated and sent forces from Louisiana.

Thank you to all our friends, family, partners, and competitors for sending thoughtful notes and well wishes throughout the event. We’ll be back to full strength soon.

-Tyson

ForeFlight Establishes TFR Desk to Ensure Accurate Depiction of Graphical TFR Information

We are excited to share that ForeFlight’s development team recently deployed technology that can recognize missing or corrupted graphical TFRs that are delivered via the NOTAM system. The new tool alerts ForeFlight’s TFR Desk team members, who then take immediate action to correct the TFR graphic and distribute it quickly to ForeFlight customers.

ForeFlight with graphical TFR

As a pilot, you rely on web, mobile, and data-link apps and services to display accurate and up-to-date TFR information. And, as Tyson Weihs, ForeFlight’s co-founder and CEO, explains: “From time-to-time, the NOTAM system publishes TFRs without the shape information necessary to depict them. We built the monitoring systems and established the TFR Desk so that pilots can have the highest-quality TFR information as quickly as possible. TFR incursions are still an important issue for the aviation community, and we are doing our part to help.”

In addition to identifying and creating or correcting TFR information, ForeFlight notifies the AOPA’s regulatory affairs team of the discrepancy, who then works with the FAA to correct the information in the NOTAM system. These corrections then make their way back to users via other channels, such as the ADS-B data link system.

The team will continue to improve the tool’s capability to also recognize misshapen TFR files. This effort helps us to quickly distribute the most accurate information and minimize the risk that a pilot will violate a TFR area.
