ForeFlight and Satcom Direct Announce SDR Flight Data Integration

ForeFlight and Satcom Direct (SD), the business aviation connectivity provider, announced today a new integrated data solution for joint Satcom Direct Router (SDR®) and ForeFlight Performance customers.

Customers can now use the SDR as a GPS data source to accurately depict aircraft “ownship” position on ForeFlight’s dynamic moving map display without the need for additional GPS hardware. With GPS location, ground speed, and indicated altitude information, passengers and crew flying with their iPad or iPhone can track the flight’s progress on the map, and see real-time information like time to destination, distance to destination, and local time of arrival.ForeFlight and SDR connectivity

When connected to the SDR’s Wi-Fi internet, ForeFlight customers can also receive and display high-resolution radar, icing, turbulence, winds aloft, and over a dozen other graphical weather layers. With access to all the latest weather, pilots can quickly and accurately change flight plans while in the air.

“Pilots rely on accurate, timely delivery of essential information to maintain secure operations. Integrating these solutions provides pilots with a clear, unimpeded view of their real-time situation,” said Jim Jensen, SD chairman and founder. “ForeFlight and SD are committed to improving the aviator’s professional experience, and we anticipate this development will be welcomed by business aviation pilots around the world.”

“We are excited to work with Satcom Direct and we look forward to future features that unlock more value from on-board connectivity,” said Tyson Weihs, ForeFlight’s co-founder and CEO.

The SDR is a business aviation connectivity platform that allows customers to connect to on-board systems, make and receive calls, text, email, connect to the internet and stream data on the ground or in the air, anywhere in the world. The router automatically senses and selects the best connection available, either satellite network or 3G cellular, and uses cutting-edge technology to compress and cache data, ensuring the most efficient and cost effective transmission of information.

ForeFlight gives pilots everything they need to plan, file, and fly the safest, most efficient route, including up-to-the-minute weather, airport and FBO information, advanced terrain and obstacle visualization, and automatic safety alerts. The current SDR integration is available to ForeFlight customers on Performance Plus and Business Performance plans.

Hurricane Harvey Update from ForeFlight

Over the weekend, Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coast. In a 24-hour period, an estimated 419,000,000,000 gallons (yes, billions) of rainfall in just Houston – and more than 9 trillion gallons in Southeast Texas over the weekend – created the worst flooding the region has ever experienced. Some areas are experiencing an “800-year flood event”.

As of this writing the rain continues to fall and flood waters in many areas are still rising as bayous and rivers overflow their banks at record levels. It was frightening to ride out and it is gut wrenching to now see the images of fellow Texans in distress.

The Houston-based ForeFlight team is fortunate: everyone has checked in as being safe and no significant injury or flood damage to our homes has been reported. Many in the Houston area have fared far worse, and our thoughts are with them.

Emergency management resources are overwhelmed and have been asking anyone with equipment  to come forward and help rescue operations. Texans are responding in force, deploying boats and other assets to assist. In last night’s press conference, the United States Coast Guard reported they have more than 20 helicopters deployed in conjunction with Customs & Border Protection and Texas Department of Public Safety, as well as three flood response teams that arrived from Paducah, KY and Memphis, TN. In addition, the good samaritans of the “Cajun Navy” activated and sent forces from Louisiana.

Thank you to all our friends, family, partners, and competitors for sending thoughtful notes and well wishes throughout the event. We’ll be back to full strength soon.

-Tyson

ForeFlight and Jeppesen Announce Strategic Alliance

We are thrilled and honored to announce this alliance with Jeppesen. It is truly a partnership with purpose that will deliver better solutions for customers, and faster than either company could accomplish on its own. The full media release is available below.

JEPPESEN AND FOREFLIGHT FORM ALLIANCE TO DELIVER INDUSTRY LEADING APPS AND FLIGHT INFORMATION TO PILOTS WORLDWIDE

Together, the companies will set a new standard for innovation, high-quality data, and software applications for pilots and flight operations across the aviation landscape

ALEXANDRIA, VA., May 4, 2017 – Jeppesen, a Boeing Company and a leader in aviation navigation and operational efficiency solutions, and ForeFlight, the innovative provider of mobile and web aviation applications, today announced that the companies have entered into in a long-term strategic alliance to combine their industry-leading capabilities and worldwide content. Together, Jeppesen and ForeFlight will build on their common heritage of delivering superior data and software to pilots and flight operations around the globe.

“We are thrilled to bring together Jeppesen’s world-class aeronautical data with the unmatched advanced technology of ForeFlight,” said Ken Sain, chief operating officer, Jeppesen. “This will create a new benchmark for delivering navigation, flight information and operational solutions with greater regularity and speed for every aviation segment, from recreational pilots to the world’s largest airlines.”

“This strategic alliance will enable ForeFlight and Jeppesen together to bring advances in capability to customers globally that neither company could accomplish on its own,” said Tyson Weihs, co-founder and chief executive officer, ForeFlight. “Both companies share common values and purpose – delivering next generation power and productivity to pilots with superior customer service.”

“We’re excited to bring Jeppesen charts and data to ForeFlight Mobile customers. The combination makes ForeFlight Mobile the premier all-in-one mobile solution for planning, briefing, filing, flying, and logging flights across personal and business aviation. Over the years, many customers have requested Jeppesen charts and data in ForeFlight Mobile, and we’re so pleased that we can now meet that need,” said Weihs.

The alliance focuses initially in two areas. First, beginning this summer, all ForeFlight subscribers will see Jeppesen global navigational, terrain and obstacle data in ForeFlight Mobile. ForeFlight subscribers on individual plans will be able to link their Jeppesen license in ForeFlight Mobile and purchase standard worldwide Jeppesen charts for use inside the app through a simple e-commerce experience on foreflight.com.

General aviation pilots will be able to choose between Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck and ForeFlight Mobile as their preferred cockpit solution. Subscribers to ForeFlight Business Plans will purchase chart coverages through Jeppesen and then link them to their ForeFlight subscription for use inside the ForeFlight Mobile app.

The alliance’s second area of focus serves users of Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro, the leading EFB solution for airlines and large-scale operators. Jeppesen and ForeFlight will work together on a next-generation release of FliteDeck Pro for both iOS and Windows that will deliver a combination of the familiar capabilities in FliteDeck Pro and significant features and functionality from ForeFlight Mobile. The solution will respect the heritage of FliteDeck Pro, while also embracing capabilities from ForeFlight Mobile that many professional pilots already have experience using. Jeppesen and ForeFlight are working together closely with FliteDeck Pro customers in advance of bringing this to market to ensure the training impact is minimized. FliteDeck Pro customers will continue to receive application and content updates from Jeppesen.

This alliance builds upon Jeppesen’s major new release of Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro, which is being deployed worldwide. FliteDeck Pro 3.0 for iOS and 9.0 for Windows includes three major features, SmartNotes which revolutionizes pilot access to charting information relevant to the flight plan, Tailored Enroute Data for customers to add their own company-specific content, and integrated high-resolution Airport Moving Map content for nearly 1,000 airports worldwide.

ForeFlight Establishes TFR Desk to Ensure Accurate Depiction of Graphical TFR Information

We are excited to share that ForeFlight’s development team recently deployed technology that can recognize missing or corrupted graphical TFRs that are delivered via the NOTAM system. The new tool alerts ForeFlight’s TFR Desk team members, who then take immediate action to correct the TFR graphic and distribute it quickly to ForeFlight customers.

ForeFlight with graphical TFR

As a pilot, you rely on web, mobile, and data-link apps and services to display accurate and up-to-date TFR information. And, as Tyson Weihs, ForeFlight’s co-founder and CEO, explains: “From time-to-time, the NOTAM system publishes TFRs without the shape information necessary to depict them. We built the monitoring systems and established the TFR Desk so that pilots can have the highest-quality TFR information as quickly as possible. TFR incursions are still an important issue for the aviation community, and we are doing our part to help.”

In addition to identifying and creating or correcting TFR information, ForeFlight notifies the AOPA’s regulatory affairs team of the discrepancy, who then works with the FAA to correct the information in the NOTAM system. These corrections then make their way back to users via other channels, such as the ADS-B data link system.

The team will continue to improve the tool’s capability to also recognize misshapen TFR files. This effort helps us to quickly distribute the most accurate information and minimize the risk that a pilot will violate a TFR area.

A friend sent in this video today. This is some B-roll of the the first ForeFlight marketing video we ever shot of ForeFlight Mobile (back then it was called “ForeFlight iPhone Edition”): version 1.0 from 2007. This was back when “apps” for the iPhone were just web pages. Developers were not able to make native apps until the summer of 2008, when ForeFlight Mobile 2.0 launched.
