The next version of ForeFlight Mobile will require iOS 5.1 or higher. iOS is the operating system that powers Apple’s mobile devices. For the vast majority of ForeFlight customers, no action is required – you are ready.
iOS 5.1 supports a large number of Apple devices. Here’s the compatibility list:
- iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S (only the original iPhone and iPhone 3G are not supported)
- iPod Touch, 3rd and 4th generation
- iPad, iPad2, and the new iPad (all iPads)
iOS 5 allows us to use more advanced features and capabilities, as well as take full advantage of Apple’s newest technology. Basically, all this results in a more tidy application and a better overall app experience. iOS 5 or greater also keeps your device’s operating system up to date more easily, using Apple’s ‘over-the-air’ update process.
Here are the steps to check which iOS version you are running:
- Open the ‘Settings’ app.
- Scroll down and tap ‘General’.
- Tap the ‘About’ option on the right side.
- On the next page, scroll until you see ‘Version’. If that reads 5.1 or higher, you are all set. If not, you’ll need to update your device.
Apple’s support site provides step-by-step instructions for updating your device’s operating system at https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623.
iOS devices running iOS 5 or greater can use Apple’s “over-the-air” update process (and likely already have the latest version awaiting installation on their device). Pilots running older iOS versions will need to update their device using iTunes on a desktop or laptop computer (instructions also available in the Apple knowledge base article).
If you cannot update your device to iOS 5.1, you will still be able to use the current version of the app: ForeFlight Mobile 4.5.4. However, you will not be able to download future updates to ForeFlight Mobile.
As always, our Fanatical Pilot Support™ team is available to answer any questions you have about the update process – just send an email to team@foreflight.com.
