Our November release includes Radar Layer Changes, ATC Sector Boundaries, Aircraft Filing Remarks, Route Filing Remarks, and added Runway Analysis Support.
Changes to Weather Layers
ForeFlight recently switched to a new data feed for radar due to the previous data source being discontinued. This has resulted in changes to the radar depiction and as well as certain other weather layers. The complete list of changes includes:
- The “Composite Radar” layer is now named simply “Radar”, and uses different color gradations to reflect intensity. The most recent version of ForeFlight includes changes to the Radar legend to reflect this.
- With the “4 Color Radar” setting enabled, the radar will now show new frames every 15 minutes. Disable 4-Color Radar in Map Settings to see more frequent radar updates.
- Storm tracks, echo tops, and severe weather icons are more prominent. Storm tracks also now depict direction using arrows rather than time-based track vectors.
- The timestamp colors for internet lightning were changed to 25 and 30 minutes.
- The “Radar (Lowest Tilt)” layer is no longer supported and has been removed. This layer is still available while connected to a SiriusXM weather receiver, however.
- The “Enhanced Satellite” and “Color IR Satellite” layers will now update every 30 minutes.
- The “Turbulence (Global)” layer (available with Pro Plus subscriptions and above) has a floor altitude of 12,000 feet, higher than the previous floor of 3,000 feet.
Our team is working to improve the depiction of radar and enable additional functionality. Stay tuned for future updates.
ATC Sector Boundaries
View ATC sector boundaries in green directly on the map as part of the Aeronautical Map’s ARTCC/FIR layer.
Start by selecting an ATC sector, then tap and hold on the map to view the information about each ACC/UAC and other airspace at that location. You can tap Details on the right for more information.
You can view ATC sector names by zooming in on the map.
A new toggle in Map Settings > ARTCC/FIR allows you to enable or disable ATC sector boundaries and ARTCC/FIR boundaries. You can also toggle between low and high ATC sector boundaries and ARTCC frequency “postage” stamps.
Aircraft Filing Remarks
Specify remarks for a given aircraft like call sign information, registration number, or SATCOM phone number to be automatically inserted into your flight plan form every time you file with that aircraft.
You can find the Remarks field by visiting More > Aircraft, selecting an aircraft, and then scrolling to the Filing section to add Remarks.
After planning a flight with that aircraft, send it to Flights, then tap Proceed to File, and you will see the remarks in the File window and have the opportunity to make any last-minute changes before filing your flight plan.
Once you tap File, your remarks will automatically be added to Section 18 of the ICAO Flight Plan. Military Flight Bag users will also see the remarks on Section 18 of the DD-1801 Flight Plan.
Route Filing Remarks
Edit mid-route adjustments like Delay/STAYs and associated remarks directly in ForeFlight’s streamlined flight plan form before filing your flight plan, so you don’t have to return to the Maps view to edit them.
After planning a flight that includes mid-route adjustments with remarks and sending it to Flights, tap Proceed to File in the bottom right and scroll to the Remarks/Other Information section to view and edit the Delay/STAY details and associated remarks.
Military Flight Bag customers can also edit and add remarks to MFB-specific mid-route adjustments like Aerial Refueling Tracks, MTRs, and Enroute Fuel Changes using the same form.
New Runway Analysis Aircraft Support
ForeFlight’s Runway Analysis product now supports Hawker 900XP.
