Flight Binders in Plates, Expanded Place Labels, and More in ForeFlight 13.2

ForeFlight 13.2 includes big changes to the Plates view with Flight Binders, expanded Place Labels on the high-resolution basemap, and more.

Flight Binders in Plates

Quickly gather, organize, and access the plates you need for an entire flight using new Flight Binders for a more seamless planning and inflight experience.

Start by tapping the Binders button in the top-left of the screen to expand the Plate Binders Drawer, which lists all Flight Binders at the top, followed by Other Binders. Any binders you had before updating ForeFlight to version 13.2 or above will appear in Other Binders with all of their plates intact.

Unlike Other Binders, Flight Binders are always based on a departure and destination airport pair. When you add a new Flight Binder ForeFlight will automatically suggest airport pairs based on any currently-entered route on Maps as well as the nearest upcoming route planned on Flights, with other flights planned further in the future listed below.

You can also add an empty Flight Binder and select the airports manually, or tap Import to display the suggested routes again and automatically populate the current binder.

The Send To menu on Flights also includes an option to create a new Flight Binder based on the flight’s route.

While Other Binders have no inherent organization, Flight Binders are highly structured and consistent, grouping plates of the same type together for each of the selected airports. Tap either of the Airport buttons on the left at any time to search for a new airport, or select one from various Recent and Favorite lists around the app. The Plate Groups below each airport follow a roughly chronological order: for departure, airport and taxi diagrams, departure plates, approach plates for a return to base scenario, and miscellaneous plates; for destination, arrival plates, approach plates, airport and taxi diagrams, and miscellaneous plates. The number shown on each Plate Group represents how many plates have been added to the Flight Binder for that group; those without a number have no plates added.

Tap on any empty group or tap twice on a non-empty group to review and add plates within that group. Tap on any plate name to view it without adding it, and tap the circle on the right to both view and add it to the binder. After adding all the plates you want within each group, swipe with three fingers to move through them plate-by-plate and group-by-group.

When you import a route from the Maps or Flights views ForeFlight will automatically add the plates associated with any procedures in the route. If you instead set the departure or destination airport manually, then ForeFlight will automatically add whichever plates were last added for the same airport, helping you build out your Flight Binders quickly no matter which method you use each time.

Expanded Place Labels

ForeFlight’s collection of Place Labels has grown by 100-fold, with over 1.4 million labels now available for the entire globe.

Included are labels for countries, states/provinces, cities/towns/villages, national parks, bodies of water like oceans, lakes, and rivers, and more.

Before
After

The expanded set of place labels is included in the High Resolution Basemap download for each region (More > Downloads > Download Settings), allowing you to save space on your device by only downloading the labels you need for your flights.

A lower-resolution set of global place labels is bundled with the app to provide useful labels even without the High Resolution set.

Enable and disable Place Labels near the top of the Map Settings menu (gear button in Maps toolbar).

Files in Flights Navlog & Briefing

Easily attach a flight’s Navlog, Graphical Briefing (PDF), and flight plan form to the flight’s Files menu for simplified record keeping and inflight access.

When viewing a Navlog or Graphical Briefing (PDF) in Flights, tap the Send To button in the top right and tap Save to Flight’s Files to add a copy of the document to the Files menu where you can rename and annotate it.

You can also send the flight’s raw filing form to Files by tapping the Send To button in the top-right after tapping Proceed to File.

The Files menu in Flights is available with ForeFlight Performance plans.

Honeywell Apex Connectivity for Pilatus Aircraft

Pilatus pilots can now wirelessly share flight details from ForeFlight with Honeywell’s Primus Apex FMS via an installed Aspen Connected Gateway.

Tap Send To > Panel on the Maps or Flights views to send flight details to the Aspen Connected Gateway, then select the Gateway as the FPLN Source within the Apex FMS to load the received information.

Sharing flights from the Maps view will share only the route, while sharing from Flights will additionally send winds and temperatures aloft, cruise fuel flow, passenger and cargo information, and other performance details if available.

French SIA VFR Charts

All customers with the Europe region can now access 1:1,000,000 and 1:250k scale VFR charts from France’s SIA at no additional charge.

The new charts are accessible as part of the “Europe VFR” map layer and can be downloaded by enabling the VFR Charts data type and the France region in More > Downloads > Europe.

German Military AIP

Customers with the Europe region can now download aerodrome charts and documents from Germany’s publicly-accessible military AIP for expanded coverage of many airports not included in the standard AIP.

The new data is automatically downloaded with other Aerodrome Charts & AIP downloads for Germany, and appears in the list of downloads as “Germany (MIL AIP).”

Airport diagrams from this dataset appear in the Airport Procedures list in a new “Bundeswehr” section.

The German Military AIP also adds new documents in the Europe Documents drive.
